Fall 2008 Youth/Scout Programs

Please note: Some programs will require a nominal fee; those will be listed once determined.  Some programs will fulfill scouting electives; these will be noted once they are determined. Reservations are required for each program and must be made by calling 814-863-2000. You will be asked to provide a credit card number and complete contact information. You will not be charged until the program is held. (You may ask for coordinator Allison D'Ambrosia, or e-mail her at aed175@psu.edu.)

Family Campfire Fun
September 5, 2008
7–9 p.m.
All ages

Badges: Brownie Try-It: Making Music

Join us for an old-fashioned campfire! Whether you didn’t get to a summer camp this year or you just can’t get enough of our own "Palomino" on the guitar, come spend a final summer evening around the fire. Experience our most popular Shaver’s Creek campfire songs and skits and help us celebrate another successful summer. All are invited to experience the magic of the campfire.


The World According to Bats
September 14, 2008
1–2:30 p.m.
Ages: 6–8
Cost: $4 non-members; $2 members

Bats are the ONLY flying mammal!! It doesn’t get much cooler than that. Come explore the wonders and adaptations of being a bat. Learn the truth about our miraculous flying friends.


Orienteering the Digital Way—GPS
September 21, 2008
1–3 p.m.
Ages: 12 and up
Cost: $5 non-members; $3 members

Ever wonder how those global positioning systems (GPS) units work? Join Dr. Bruce Lord of the Penn State School of Forest Resources for an intriguing afternoon of orienteering in the twenty-first century. After learning the basics of how the devices work, we’ll set out on a scavenger hunt through Shaver’s Woods in search of treasure…who knows where it will lead us!

 


All About Birds

Birds are amazing creatures! Being able to fly is what we consider a superpower, but they do it every day. Come explore how birds can fly and other amazing adaptations of being a bird. We will talk about all things bird and even get to see some of our marvelous raptors up close!! We can then use our knowledge to build our own flying machines, modeling them after our bird friends.

 


Owl Prowl

The nighttime is an amazing time to explore!! Come learn about the critters of the night and their activities that go on while we are sleeping. We’ll begin our adventure learning about the resident birds of Shaver’s Creek and as night falls we’ll adventure out on the trails to discuss how the animals survive at night. We will cap our evening attempting to call the native owls of Shaver’s Woods. With some good weather and some good luck hopefully we’ll hear back from our feathered friends!


Survival Skills
November 1, 2008
1–3 p.m.
Ages: 8–11
Cost: $5 non-members; $3 members
Badges: Junior: Outdoor Fun (partial)

Come explore the wonders of wilderness survival! We will be exploring three basic pieces of surviving in an emergency: constructing a shelter, building a campfire, and making a litter (a stretcher, of sorts). While we hope we will never have to use these skills, being able to survive in an emergency is an important part of being safe and knowledgeable. Come learn the tools of survival with us!
Space Explorers
November 9, 2008

Ever wonder what is out there? The mysteries of space are still being unraveled today. Come learn about the stars and constellations with us as well as stories associated with them. Experience our indoor “planetarium” designed by our own Doug Steigerwalt where you can see stars in the middle of the afternoon. We’ll learn how the seasons work and why the moon appears to change shape every night. The stars and planets are amazing things! Be a rocket scientist for the day with us at Shaver’s Creek.

GUTS!!
November 16, 2008

Ages: 15 and up
Cost: $8 non-members; $5 members

Ever want to see what is on the inside of creatures? Come discover the inner workings of mammals and be able to touch and feel eyes, kidneys, and the heart! We will spend time dissecting some different pieces and looking at how they function within the animal. The body is a miraculous thing, all working together. Let’s break it down and see how it really works! No animals were harmed and all organs come through a biological supplier.
